| Education and Urgency Shui: You set a kind of example for millions of millions of young people, especially students who are now in the universities and colleges. And they would say, you know jokingly say, “Look, Bill dropped out from Harvard, so we can follow his example.” Gates: Well I’d encourage people to finish their education, you know. Unless there’s something that’s so compelling and so time-sensitive, it’s really a lot better to go through your whole education. And I actually was at Harvard a total of 3 years by the time it was all done, and that was great for me. Shui: So you only have one year left to finish Harvard. Gates: Yeah, actually, I had enough Advanced Placement that it was even less than that. If I’d known I was only going to be there 3 years, I could have done my degree requirements. But of course that hasn’t really held me back in any way. Shui: So you’re now grateful that Harvard can give you an honorary degree? Gates: That’ll be a fun event. It’ll be the 30th, 30 years after I would have graduated. Shui: So I would say that’s a good news, a little bit late. Gates: Yeah, it’ll be fun to be back there. Generating Success Shui: I guess you know, actually now, a lot of people now, are calling Microsoft as an “empire”. And it’s really, you know, a phenomenal miracle for Microsoft to be as it is today. Tell me, why do you think it is Microsoft who can win out, you know, beating everybody, and being as a kind of an empire today. Gates: Microsoft started out with the idea that software was important, and that we would hire the best software people and really dedicate ourselves to building a software platform that enabled other people’s success. You know, for every dollar of revenue Microsoft gets, over 10 dollars goes to our local partners in China. And those are software companies, consulting companies, hardware companies. And so we built an ecosystem around Windows that has led to such a variety of great solutions. And as we feed the success of those partners, that in turn has helped us to do very well. Shui: So you think Microsoft will survive and will, let’s say, win out in the fierce competition in the future? Gates: In the software industry there’s room for literally hundreds of thousands of successes, particularly given our model where we do the base platform and we let others come in and do these other pieces. And so, yes, this will be a growing part of the economy. I can’t guarantee Microsoft’s success, but we are investing in people, which has been key to our success throughout our history; in every country we’re in we sit down and try to understand the particular needs and requirements in that market. Here in China it took us many years to support the Chinese language the way we should, to understand the distribution, but because we started so early, we’ve been able to learn, and we keep getting better at that. And so we have to invest; we have to take a long-term point of view; we have to make sure the partnerships — where people build on what we do — that those are very strong. |
