Candace Lee Williams: On the Way to Hollywood How to comprehend the terrible symmetry1) that returned Candace Lee Williams to the place of her triumph, the World Trade Center? A 20-year-old student in the cooperative work-study program at Northeastern University in Boston, she toiled2) from January to June at Merrill Lynch as an intern on the 14th floor of 1 World Trade Center. “Then they wrote Northeastern a letter saying, ‘Send us five more like Candace.’”? On Sept. 11 in Boston, Candace boarded Flight 11, which was then hijacked and sent crashing into the same trade center tower where she had worked. “The airline told us she was seated next to an 80-year-old grandmother on the plane,” her mother said, “and I know that Candace was consoling that woman to the last.” Zhe Zeng:“Completely Selfless Person” The first plane struck the north tower as he was leaving the Brooklyn Bridge subway stop, and he could have stayed in his Barclay Street office, blocks away from the carnage3), at the Bank of New York where he was project manager for American depositary4) receipts. But Mr. Zeng, 29, who was known as Zack, was also a certified emergency medical technician, and after stopping by his office for some supplies, he plunged into the maelstrom5) of dust and ash. A news video broadcast later that day showed him working, still in his business suit, over a prostrate6) form. But he has not been seen since. Kevin Smith: Born to Serve Firefighter Kevin Smith spent almost 20 years preparing for Sept. 11. When he called his wife, Jerri, that morning, his voice trembled with excitement, not fear. “He was saying, ll my work during all those years and now here it is,’”?Mrs. Smith said. In the early 1980s, Firefighter Smith, 47, became a charter member7) of the Fire Department’s hazardous8) materials unit. Then, after the first trade center bombing, in 1993, he was detailed9) to the mayor’s Office of Emergency Management. He took on the most dangerous aspect of a most dangerous occupation because that was the kind of thing he had always done. “He just had this desire to serve,” said his sister Catherine. When they married, both brought children, eight in all, from earlier marriages. Each one inherited the same steely notion of service. One now is a sailor. One a marine. Two daughters are taking the police exam. And one son, Brian, who was a Fire Department emergency medical service officer on 9/11, was there, and survived, when the towers fell on his father. Richard Salinardi: Back Home Every Summer His parents took a young Richie Salinardi out of New York, but nobody took his New York — the Yankees, the Rangers, the beach — out of the boy. He came home from St. Louis every summer to hang out with his cousins at Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. |
