| On Sept. 11, Mr. Salinardi was the Aramark Corporation’s general manager for food services in the south tower. Instead of pushing his way onto a crowded elevator, he told a co-worker, Gary Angelica, that he and his staff would catch the next one. He was last seen joking with John Gamboni, probably about their plans to fly to Ecuador the next day to see Mr. Gamboni’s parents. Anthony Peluso: A Proudly Silly So-and-So Whenever Anthony Peluso pulled out the saxophone and played his favorite song, “I’ve Got the World on a String,” his listeners could only nod in agreement. “He was so gorgeous, but he never strutted around,” said his fianc, Ann Marie. “I couldn’t believe it.” Mr. Peluso, 46, worked long hours as a construction supervisor for Structure Tone, but he always found time to check on his mother, Lillian Peluso. He was overseeing work at 2 World Trade Center on Sept. 11 — a Tuesday, so he had his sax with him for his weekly music lesson. At his memorial service in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, his teacher, Vincent Della Rocca, played the old standards Mr. Peluso loved, like “My Funny Valentine” and, of course, his favorite: Life is a beautiful thing, As long as I hold the string I’m be a silly so-and-so If I should ever let it go. I’ve got the world on a string... Kris Robert Hughes: Brothers, Together Kris Robert Hughes and his brother, Keith, were romping10) through Connetquot River State Park Preserve on Long Island when they saw two men, older men, fishing in a river. Their lines were flying back and forth over their heads in controlled motions, said their father, Robert Hughes. The two brothers, who grew up in Nesconset, N.Y., did most everything together. They learned to train red-tailed hawks on eastern Long Island. They trapped them in potato fields, where the birds prey on11) mice, rabbits and pheasants. “They just love nature,” Mrs. Hughes said. “Kris, especially, was one with nature. He always had to have pets — ducks, chickens, cats, dogs, parakeets12). They all liked him. Ducks sat on his lap. If I went near the things, they would start pecking at me.” The brothers even worked together on the risk-arbitrage13) desk at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods on the 89th floor of 2 World Trade Center. About two years ago, Keith Hughes, 31, took a job at another company away from the World Trade Center. Kris Hughes, 30, remained. |
