| Donations and Transparency7) 资金募集与公众信誉 Shui: You carry out your programs largely depending on those donations — donations either from organizations, from groups or institutions or from individuals. This question is obvious, and I guess maybe this is a very important question for Chinese potential donators. How can they be sure their money is not used against their will? Leape: It means that we need to be utterly transparent. It needs to be very clear to people where our money is going and our books need to be audited and so forth. So we need to be run in a very professional way, so people have confidence —they know what we誶e doing with their money.And we need to communicate with them so that they understand the conservation work we誶e doing with their support, and they can understand how it’s making a difference. But it’s of course the completely legitimate question. And we need to have a good answer to anyone who asks the question. Shui: Actually I think you are doing quite well. I noticed that every year you have kind of a balance of financial report for each fiscal year, everything like that. Anything you are doing I guess is quite transparent. Leape: Yes, we go to great lengths to try to ensure that we are transparent and accountable and open about what we are doing and that’s important to the public’s trust. It’s Simple 从我做起，环保并不难 Shui: Talking about environmental protection, usually it’s kind of a serious topic. But actually my understanding is that it is not so complicated. Am I right? Leape: In the end, we are talking about taking care of our home. We all live on this planet, and we need to take care of it. We all have a pretty good sense of what that means. Now we’ve learned more about it over the last 20 years than we knew before. We never imagined 20 years ago or 30 years ago that we could change the climate of planet. We never imagined 30 years ago that we could take so many fish out of the ocean, that the ocean would be a different place, that it would be permanently or at least drastically changed from what it was. We never imagined 30 years ago that our impacts could add up to that kind of global significance. So we are learning more about the difference we made on the planet. And in that sense, it becomes more complex. But in the end the notion is quite simple. We depend on this planet for life and we need to take care of it. That means we need to be careful about how much we ask of it in the resources we take and how much we impose upon it in the wastes that we generate. Shui: Actually you suggest people with very concrete or substantial advice. For example, you noticed that at WWF you have an activity called“What’s behind your favorite seafood”. And then not only you pointed out that it’s bad or it’s not good to eat some kind of seafood, but also you pointed us with some kind of alternatives for almost everything. For example you don’t eat lobster, but rather you can eat something else which is also very healthy and which is tasteful. I think this is also very mindful. Leape: This is actually a good example. This is quite important, as people can sometimes be overhwhelmed: “Okay, I know I’m supposed to take care of the planet. But what do I do? I’m just one person. How do I make choices that really matter?” So part of our mission is to help people understand the choices they can make really do matter. And the choices you make in the way you use energy is one example; the choices you make in the food you buy is another. And the fact is that if each consumer begins to make choices differently, the markets will respond. And we’ll take better care of the oceans if people pay more attention to what fish they buy. And so it’s important that everybody begin to get involved.   |
