| Who said that? Many students, especially those with native English teachers, have been warned against plagiarism. Plagiarism is the use of another person’s words OR ideas without acknowledging (or gaining permission from) the original author. In English-speaking countries, plagiarism merits punishment, fines, and in some cases, jail time, which is why native speakers consider it such a serious offense. I remember difficulty in explaining plagiarism to my students. They believe —as part of their culture — that adopting other people’s words expresses respect for and understanding of the original author.1)How could that be a crime? Other students argued that after reading a text, the words became part of their knowledge, and could then be used as their own ideas. Both thoughts are understandable, but run counter2) to the thoughts of English-speaking countries, which strive to identify originality. These countries require all information either to be original, or to be quoted and marked so the original source can be found. This means that when we write in English, every idea we did not create, and every sentence first-written by someone else, should be cited3). Today we will learn three simple ways to properly cite4) words and ideas. Citing an exact quotation from a person or text As content: include the author, publication and date in the sentence. This is common in school essays, newspapers and magazines. × Their school’s test scores improved every year for the last five years. √ “Our school’s test scores improved every year for the last five years,” said Mr. Zhu in Friday’s meeting. × Of the 15 companies that went public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, 12 of them experienced opening-day rises of more than 10 percent. √ On February 28th, New York Times reporter David Barboza wrote, “Of the 15 companies that went public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, 12 of them experienced opening-day rises of more than 10 percent.” As footnotes: separate the information, number it, and place it at the bottom of the page. This is common in journal publications and in this magazine, New Oriental English. “Offshore financial centres are booming, thanks to their easy-going tax regimes.”5) “The deleterious effects of early malnutrition on intellectual development can continue into adulthood”6) You can get help with correctly organizing citation information at www.easybib.com. As parenthetical citations: mention author names in the sentence or in parentheses7), and include publication dates and page numbers in parentheses. This is common in book reports and for research and business papers. Parenthetical citations require a list of all sources organized by author name —called a bibliography or works cited page— attached to the back of the paper. “Chinglish is a language based on nouns... it is complicated, long-winded, ponderous, and obscure” (Pinkerton, 2005, p.170). Strunk and White (1979) remind us to “write with nouns and verbs, not with adjectives and adverbs” (p.71). |
