And welcome again to China, to Beijing. I would like to start our interview with a picture. It’s here, and I think you can recognize this picture. It’s a historic moment — 2001. Juan: 2001 in Moscow. Shui: That’s right. Juan: The last station I presided1). Shui: Tell us something about that moment. I mean, when you are going to open the envelope, and to announce the winner of the 29th Olympic Games. I guess you didn’t know the result. Juan: No. Shui: Do you have a speculation2)? Juan: Yes. I had a speculation that Beijing could be the winner, because for me, the meet of Beijing was the best one. And also, I can not forget that they were very close to get the games for the year 2000. As you know, you lost for only 2 votes. Shui: At that time, I mean in 1993, everybody in China was sad that they didn’t get the chance... Juan: I would like to say one thing, that maybe the people, they were disappointed. But for me, it’s much better for China to organize the games in 2008 than the year 2000. Shui: Why? Juan: Because in 8 years there’s another country. Improvement of the country is fantastic. You can do many things that was much more difficult in the year 2000. And now for 2008, I think you have all the conditions to present to the world fantastic Games. Shui: I see what you mean. Actually, you know, what you mean is that in 2008 China is better prepared and the economy, the whole country, is better off. And by this time you have an Olympic, you can guarantee the success and magnificence of this Games. Juan: I will say that now is the right moment for China to organize the Olympic Games. Shui: Here you pronounced the name Beijing to the whole world and to more than one billion Chinese. I was in Beijing, and the whole country was just wild and crazy. And I heard that before you went on the stage to do the announcement, you even checked with vice president He Zhenliang the pronunciation of “Beijing”. Is that correct? Juan: Actually, Liang is my friend for many, many years. So he advised me not only to pronounce in a very good manner the word Beijing, he also advised me many other items in the IOC3). He was my advisor not only for China, he was my advisor for Asia... But we had a good team... He Zhenliang can be my right hand for many occasions. Shui: Tell me something about your evaluation or comment right now about Beijing’s preparation for next year’s Olympic Games. So far do you think everything is okay? Juan: Yes, yes, everything is okay.You’ve been very lucky to present to the world the best sport facilities that someone can imagine: the stadium and the swimming pools. For the success of the Games, you need two conditions. One is a very good organization. You will have it; you have a very good organizing committee, BOCOG4). And second, the second condition, is the participation of the home team. All the people expect that China can get very good results. But that is not easy. They have to prepare very well, the athletes and the teams, to improve the results you got in Athens. Because in Athens you got fantastic results. |
