| Shui: Last year, I also had a chance to interview your successor, President Rogge. And I asked him almost the same question, and he gave me the advice, he said, “The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing will be very successful.” He believes so, but he says, “advice to the Chinese team, not to take all the gold medals away from the whole world.” Good advice? Juan: Yes, good advice, but for me, more gold medals, more get China, is better. Shui: Yeah, that is so nice of you. And you will come to China next year? Juan: Yes, well, if I am healthy enough, because I am very old. But my dream is to come to China, yes. To come to China from the beginning to the end of the Games. Shui: You must come, because millions of Chinese people would be very happy to see you. Juan: But I would like to say that today for a country like China, the most important event you can organize is the Olympic Games. You can not compare the Olympic Games to any other kind of sport or social event. That is the most important. And I hope that you will present to the world wonderful Games, and I hope also, the best Games in the Olympic history. And speaking regarding the International Olympic Committee, as you know, when I finished my mandate after 21 years as the president of the International Olympic Committee, in Moscow 2001, we took two important decisions. One was the election of the new President, Jacques Rogge, and I think we chose the right man. He’s a great president. And the second was the election of Beijing. That was a dream for me, and finally in the last minute of my presidency we got this decision to give the Games to my Chinese friends. Shui: Tell us what is your feeling towards this kind of a traditional relationship, or I would say friendship, between you and China? Juan: Well my relations in China began in the late 1970s. In the late 1970s I was the Spanish ambassador in Moscow, in the Soviet Union. And I had a very good relation with your ambassador. And we began to speak of the recognition of your National Olympic Committee, because the Chinese Olympic Committee was not theorized. And I was elected in 1980. One of the first things that I did was to speak with the authorities in Beijing, to reach an agreement with them. See, then, the participation of China was very easy. You took part for the first time in 1984 in Los Angeles. And I wanted to present the first day of the games who was the final of the shooting. And Xu Haifeng was the winner, and I had the honor to present to him the first gold medal you won in the Olympic Games. Shui: I see. Juan: I was very pleased, very happy. Shui: I see.
