Sweet-sour cranberry sauce, or cranberry jelly, was on the first Thanksgiving table and is still served today. The cranberry is a small, sour berry. It grows in bogs7), or muddy areas, in Massachusetts and other New England states. The Indians used the fruit to treat infections. They used the juice to dye their rugs and blankets. They taught the colonists how to cook the berries with sweetener and water to make a sauce. The Indians called it “ibimi” which means “bitter berry.” When the colonists saw it, they named it “crane-berry” because the flowers of the berry bent the stalk over, and it resembled the long-necked bird called the crane. The berries are still grown in New England. Very few people know, however, that before the berries are put in bags to be sent to the rest of the country, each individual berry must bounce at least four inches high to make sure it is not too ripe!
Public observances8) of Thanksgiving usually emphasize the holiday’s connection with the Pilgrims. Thanksgiving pageants9) and parades often feature children dressed in Pilgrim costume10), complete with bonnets or tall hats, dark clothes, and shoes with large silver-colored buckles11).
The custom of watching football games on Thanksgiving Day also evolved during the early decades of the 20th century. As football became increasingly popular in the 1920s and 1930s, many people began to enjoy the holiday at a football stadium. Teams in the National Football League eventually established the tradition of playing nationally televised games on Thanksgiving afternoon.

  Turkey Facts
  火鸡小常识

  * At one time, the turkey and the bald12) eagle were each considered as the national symbol of America. Benjamin Franklin was one of those who argued passionately on behalf of the turkey. Franklin felt the turkey, although “vain and silly”, was a better choice than the bald eagle, whom he felt was“a coward13)”.
  * Age is a determining factor in taste. Old, large males are preferable to young toms14) (males) as tom meat is stringy. The opposite is true for females: old hens15) are tougher birds16).
  * Turkeys have great hearing, but no external ears. They can also see in color, and have excellent visual acuity17) and a wide field of vision, which makes sneaking up on them difficult. Turkeys have a poor sense of smell, but an excellent sense of taste.
  * Turkeys sometimes spend the night in trees.
