EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The play that saved the season, if only for one week, started with defensive back Abram Elam.
Buffalo quarterback J. P. Losman never saw Elam closing in, reaching for the football, stripping it away. The ball bounced down the turf, out of the hands of Bryan Thomas, into those of defensive end Shaun Ellis, out of his hands and into them again.
Ellis rumbled into the end zone, snatching a victory the Jets absolutely needed from what appeared to be an almost certain defeat. The Jets snapped their two-game losing streak with a 31-27 victory over the free-falling Bills in front of a nearly full Giants Stadium.
It did not come easily. It came with Miami beating San Francisco, with New England set to play later in the afternoon. Those three teams — the Jets, the Dolphins and the Patriots — entered the day tied for first place in the American Football Conference East.
It came after Fred Jackson, the Bills’ backup running back, carried half of the Jets’ defense into the end zone for an embarrassing 11-yard score that put the Bills in front. It came after the defensive touchdown, and after cornerback Darrelle Revis grabbed an interception, his third this season that sealed a Jets victory.
It came with the Jets needing to win all three of their remaining games to guarantee themselves a division victory. Now: one down, two to go.
The Jets’ first drive belonged to a pair of aging and unlikely ball carriers. First it was Brett Favre, wobbling up the left sideline following play action, looking very much like a 39-year-old quarterback, gaining 27 yards as if in slow motion. Two plays later, fullback Tony Richardson gained 12 yards on a delayed draw.
The likely candidate scored the touchdown, as Thomas Jones barreled in from 2 yards out. The score marked his 15th total and 13th rushing touchdown of the season, along with the eighth straight game in which he found the end zone — good for a trio of team single-season records.
The Bills converted a fake punt on their next drive, leading to a 35-yard gain from running back Marshawn Lynch, leading to a 34-yard field goal from place-kicker Rian Lindell.
Despite their recent slide, the Jets refused to blink. Favre found receiver Laveranues Coles three times during the first two drives, matching their output from the past two games combined. The Jets threw deep, and they threw often, and Favre tossed an 11-yard touchdown to receiver Jerricho Cotchery for a 14-3 lead.
On a conference call this month with reporters from the Bay Area, Coles acknowledged that the Jets’ offense runs through Favre instead of him now. So it was that a second-quarter pass from Favre ran right through Coles’ arms, bouncing off cornerback Leodis McKelvin and into the arms of linebacker Paul Posluszny.
The Bills ran the ball right at the Jets defense, a unit ranked fourth in the N.F.L. at stopping the run entering this game, but one that had slipped in recent weeks. Quarterback J.P. Losman, making his second straight start for the injured Trent Edwards, capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown scramble.
Losman became the latest low-profile quarterback to deconstruct the Jets. But not until after another penalty by James Ihedigbo on a kick return. Not until after another penalty on the offense — Damien Woody, false start — helped give the Bills the ball back.
Roscoe Parrish, the returner with rare speed, gained 56 yards on the ensuing punt return, streaking up the right sideline. Lynch bounced like a pinball for 14 yards, and two plays later, Losman hit Steve Johnson on a 2-yard slant route.
Suddenly, the Bills — the same team that had lost six of seven games, who had not scored a touchdown in the last two — led, 17-14.
But the short-lived lead was erased by the shortest player on the field. Leon Washington, the Jets’ dynamic all-purpose can of Red Bull, shot up the middle of the field as if released by a cannon. He cut right, then right again, then streaked the rest of the 47 yards into the end zone for his latest blink-and-you-missed-it touchdown.
Washington’s head bounced off the turf after the score, and he stayed down momentarily until heading to the locker room. He played in the second half.
Receiver Brad Smith was inactive following the concussion he sustained last week at San Francisco. In his place stood David Clowney, perhaps the Jets’ fastest player, who was active for the first time this season. Clowney made his first grab a spectacular one, tipping the ball with his left hand into his body for a 26-yard gain.
Later that drive, Favre launched a deep ball to Cotchery, but was unable to fully step into his release. The pass floated harmfully right to cornerback Terrence McGee, who returned it 36 yards up the sideline.
The field position led to a 48-yard field goal from Lindell, a kick that bounced off the right upright but still went through. The kick cut the Jets’ lead to 21-20.
After the Bills’ defense got the ball back, Losman’s dart to receiver Josh Reed was tipped and intercepted by cornerback Hank Poteat, the veteran the Jets cut in training camp then signed early in the season. Score one for the Jets’ leaky secondary, which ranked 31st in the league entering this game against the pass.
The pick gave the Jets the ball on the Bills’ 20, and when Jay Feely made the 31-yard field goal, it marked his 12th straight without a miss.
McKelvin took the ensuing kickoff from one end zone to the other, but officials whistled George Wilson for holding, negating the Bills’ score. The Jets’ defense forced a punt, and punter Brian Moorman pinned Favre and company again, this time on the 3-yard-line.
The drive started on the Bills’ own 36-yard-line, as they trailed by 4 points in this battle of reeling American Football Conference East foes. At that point, the Jets’ leaky secondary had put together its best effort in months.
But Losman carved up the secondary en route to the Jackson touchdown, setting up the late heroics from the Jets defense.
The Bills would get the ball back one last time, but this time, it was far too late.
