"Let's have a bit of breakfast , Jim,"I said. "Get the fire going, will you ?"
"what's the use of a fire for berries and roots and stuff like that ?" he asked me .
"Berries and roots ?" I said . "Is that what you've been living on ? Poor old Jim , you must be starving !"
I led him to the canoe and while he made a fire , I took out the flour, meat , coffee and sugar, coffee-pot , the frying-pan and the tin cups. Jim couldn't believe his eyes when he saw all these good things.
"It's magic , that's what that is , "he declared. I caught a big fish which Jim cleaned and fried . We ate breakfast , smoking hot . Jim was as hungry as a wolf and he ate till I feared that he would burst. When we could eat no more, we sat down and talked.
"Look here , Huck ," said Jim , "who was it that was killed in that hut?"
I told him the whole story and when I had finished , he said.
"You're a clever one , Huck , you are ."
"How did you get here , Jim ?" I asked in my turn .
"You won't tell anybody if I tell you , will you , Huck?"
