"But I had a bit of bad luck, Huck . A man came with the lantern close to where I was hiding and so I had to jump overboard sooner than I had planned . I knew that I'd be pretty safe on Jackson's Island."
As we were talking, more and more storm clouds were gathering in the sky . We didn't want our things to get wet and so we climbed a hill to a cave we knew of and stored our supplies in it . Then we took some fish off the lines , built a fire ouside the cave and sat down inside the cave to eat them . We were eating them when the storm burst . The lightning flashed and the thunder roared but it didn't trouble us inside our warm and comfortable cave.
"Well ,Jim , this is really nice, isn't it?" I said. "It's better here than anywhere else I can think of. Pass me another bit of that fish, will you? And I'd like a bit more of that hot bread."
The storm lasted all through that night and the rain poured down in torrents . For twelve days the river went on rising till the lower parts of the island were all flooded. All sorts of things came floating down the river. Braches , trees , logs and rafts wrer carried down by the swift current.
