What is it going to take to get us to mend our ways? Apparently a massive global financial crisis isn't enough. Neither are we convinced by a huge debt hangover which is going to haunt us for generations to come. Because despite everything that has happened during the recession, we're still sticking to our bad habits. So what's going on, and why aren't we doing anything to help ourselves? A new survey by Deloitte has found that fewer than four in ten consumers are saving more for a rainy day than they were before the recession. Just 38% of consumers in Great Britain are now choosing to put more of their savings aside, compared with over half (56%) of the respondents who are not. The survey also found that, less than half (49%) are opting to pay off more of their debt than before the recession. It isn't blissful ignorance at work. Over two-thirds (67%) of consumers said they are more aware of their personal finances than they were two years ago. Some 60% of consumers are now more concerned about how safe their bank is compared to two years ago. Some would argue that times are just too tough at the moment for us to tackle anything really serious, and that we're all in survival mode at the moment. However, this is just an excuse. Separate studies have shown that after a massive heart-attack, only one third of patients are able to change their lifestyle. The penalty for not changing is, in all likelihood, death, and still we are unable to shake the habits of the past It's this attachment to our lifestyle and habits that is at fault. Most of us are so deeply stuck in the rut of overspending and living beyond our means that we simply don't know how to live any other way. We're doomed, we're all doomed. Unless, of course, you can muster the willpower, and learn the techniques to buck the trend. Financial ruin or a new set of habits? The choice is yours. |
