Experiments have proved that children can be instructed in swimming at a very early age. At a special swimming pool in Los Angeles, children become expert at holding their breath under water even before they can walk. 2. Babies of two months old do not appear to be reluctant to enter the water. It is not long before they are so accustomed to swimming that they can pick up weights from the floor of the pool. 3. A game that is very popular with these young swimmers is the underwater tricycle race. Tricycles are lined up on the floor of the pool seven feet under water. The children compete against each other to reach the other end of the pool. Many pedal their tricycles, but most of them prefer to push or drag them. Some children can cover the whole length of the pool without coming up for breath even once. 4. Whether they will ever become future Olympic champions, only time will tell. Meanwhile, they should encourage those among us who cannot swim five yards before they are gasping for air. Part V:听力与口语训练 短对话1: Woman: Have you finished with today’s newspaper? Man: Help yourself. I’m still working on yesterday’s. 短对话2: Woman: It’s such a nice day. Why don’t we have lunch outside? Man: OK, but let’s find someplace that is not too noisy. 短对话3: Woman: Look at the time. I’m going to miss my bus. Man: Don’t worry. I’ll drive you to the bus stop. And if the bus has already left, I can get you to your house. 短对话4: Woman: Didn’t Bill give a wonderful speech? Man: Are you serious? 短对话5: Woman: I’ve been invited to a dinner party at Mary’s place. Do you think I should bring something? Man: You could pick up a cake. Chocolate is her favorite. 短对话6: Man: Do you feel like watching the evening news? Woman: You’d better stay away from me. I have a bad cold and wouldn’t want you to catch it. 短对话7: Woman: Would you like some milk in your coffee? Man: Please. 短对话8: Man: I can’t seem to solve this problem. Woman: Neither can I. 单词与短语: stay away from sb.离某人远点 Part VI:快速阅读 Letter 1: Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to you to complain about the food and service that we received at your restaurant on Monday, 28th February. The first problem was that, although we had booked a table, we were squashed(挤,压)around a small table at the back of the restaurant near the toilet(厕所). It was very noisy and the smell was very unpleasant(令人不快的). Secondly, during and after our meal, the service was bad. The waiter who delivered(端,送)soup to my wife had his thumb(拇指)in it. Another waiter spilt(溅洒)some custard(蛋奶沙司酱)on my mother-in-law’s lap(腿). In general(总之), the waiters were rude and the service was horrible(糟糕). Finally, even though the reputation(声誉)of your restaurant is good, the food was mediocre(平庸的). The steak(牛排) was tough(硬的), the vegetables were over-cooked(烧得太过火)and the desserts(甜点)were stale(带霉味的). The food definitely(绝对)did not deserve(值,配得上)the price. Also, I think some of the food was bad because I and two members of my family had stomachaches the following day. Since we feel we should be compensated(补偿)somehow(不管怎样), we ask you to refund the total cost of our meal. A copy of the bill is enclosed. I hope to receive your reply shortly. Yours faithfully Kenny Gao Letter 2: Dear Mr. More, Thank you for your letter dated(日期为)August 23, 2006. I was very pleased to learn that you will be visiting Shanghai from September 25 to 30. I hope the following information will help you enjoy your stay in my hometown. First of all, Shanghai is a big and busy city. There are many international quality(质量)hotels and restaurants as well as shopping centers and entertainment(娱乐)places. However, I think you would like to see some interesting places that well represent(代表)the city. I know you are interested in art and history, so firstly, I suggest you visit Shanghai Museum, one of the biggest in China. Secondly, not far from the museum is the famous Bund(外滩), where you will also have a wonderful view of Pudong: the Oriental(东方的)Pearl(珍珠)TV Tower, and Jinmao Tower—the third highest building in the world! You will see people from all over the world touring around(游览)the Bund. Other interesting places are Suzhou—a beautiful city that is famous for its gardens; Hangzhou, capital(省府,首都)of Zhejiang Province, which is very famous for its West Lake. If you would like to see an old-fashioned(老式的)village with the most distinctive(鲜明的)features(特征)of the region(地区)of waters in the Changjiang River Delta(长江三角洲), I will highly(高度,极力)recommend(推荐)Zhouzhuang, which is about a one-hour drive(开车)from Shanghai. I hope these suggestions(建议)will be helpful. As you only have a short stay in Shanghai, you probably will not be able to do much more sightseeing. But if I can help in any other way, please let me know. Looking forward to meeting you here in Shanghai! Yours sincerely, Kenny Gao |
