    Officer ： Good afternoon ， sir. May I see your passport ， please？

    Peter ： Of course. Here you are.

    Officer ： What is the purpose of your visit？ Business or pleasure？

    Peter ： Pleasure.

    Officer ： I see. How long will you be staying in the U.S.？

    Peter ： About two weeks. I'll be leaving on June 10th.

    Officer ： Where do you intend to visit while in the country？

    Peter ： LA first ； then I'll be heading on to New York city.

    Officer ： Do you have a return ticket to the P.R.C.？

    Peter ： Yes； however， I'll be returning via Japan——not going
back to the P.R.C. directly.

    讲解：

    1.这段对话讲的是下了飞机之后，要到入境处办理一些手续。入境处官员就
会要求看你的护照（May I see your passport ， please ？）。除了验证你的
护照，入境处官员（immigration officer ）还会顺带问你一些问题，比如你到
这个国家来做什么，停留的日期，返回的日期等等。一般就是例行公事，不会太
刁难人。

    2. What is the purpose of your visit？ Business or pleasure ？你此
行的目的是什么？出差还是旅游？注意这里用的是pleasure来回答的，一般回答
要简短，不用太详细。

    3. Where do you intend to visit while in the country？这段时间你都
打算到哪去？你可以简单地把你的行程告诉他就可以了。总之，态度要大方、友
好就行了。

    4. head on to 前往某地，一般是说先到某地，然后在从这个地方到另一个
地方。比如：After visiting Aunt Sarah in Paris， I'm heading on to London.
在巴黎看望Sarah 姨妈后，我接着就要去伦敦。 head for somewhere 去某地，
但这个词组表示直接去某地，比如：Where are you heading for ？ I'm heading
for San Fransisco.你要去哪啊？我要去旧金山。

    5. a return ticket返程机票，一般如果出国时间比较短的话，可以买two-way
ticket，或者round-way ticket，也就是往返机票。

    6. I'll be returning via Japan中via 这个词是经过，经由的意思，这句
话也就是说我回去的时候会途经日本，在日本转机。
