| I'm off the hook. 钓鱼时用鱼钩(fish hook)，当鱼儿被钩住就表示麻烦，能逃脱离倒钩，就表示逃过一难，所以当我们说：I'm off the hook (我脱离倒钩) ，比喻‘逃离险境，免于受责’的意思。这个险境可以是大事情或小事情，也可用：I got away with it (我逃离某情况) / I'm not responsible anymore(不是我的责任) / It's not my problem anymore (再不是我的问题了)。 对 话 Marcus: So I'll see you on Sunday at the company picnic? Joe: Not this year, I'm off the hook. Marcus: You are so lucky. What could possibly get you out of going? Joe: That's easy my friend. I'm having surgery. (Pretends to be injured) Marcus: You lucky guy. Maybe I'll try that next year. 马卡斯：我会在星期日的公司旅行见你吗？ 乔：今年不会，我避过了。 马卡斯：你真走运，你怎样可以不用去呢？ 乔：那容易吧，我要动手术嘛 (假装受伤)。 马卡斯：你真幸运，或许我明年也试一下。 公司星期天举行野餐，职员自然不高兴，有借口可以不去的职员说：I'm off the hook。Hook是钓钩，俚语off the hook（脱离钓钩）即‘可免负责、困难、惩罚等’，常见于成语to get/let somebody off the hook，例如：(1) I'm afraid I have an appointment this evening and can't do overtime. Please let me off the hook.（我今晚有约在先，不能加班，这次加班请免了我吧）。(2) I cannot perjure myself to get him off the hook.（我不能为了帮助他脱身而发假誓）。 留意off the hook一语，假如用于电话，是指听筒没有挂上，这样别人就没法接通你的电话了。I always take the phone off the hook before I go to bed即‘我就寝前，习惯把电话听筒拔下’。 要说做了错事或犯了罪得免惩罚，除了用off the hook一语，你还可以说to get away with it/with (blue) murder。这个murder只是比喻坏事，不一定指谋杀，例如：Tom has eaten his sister's ice cream again. We must not let him get away with it（或with blue murder）this time.（汤姆又吃了妹妹的冰淇淋，这一次可不能饶他了）。 此外还有to get away/off scot-free的说法。这个scot不是指苏格兰人，而是古时英国一种地方税。Scot-free即免纳这种税。引申解作‘安然脱身’或‘免受惩罚’，例如：Though obviously guilty, he got off scot-free（他明显有罪，却丝毫没有受到惩罚）。 |
