Larry 的新邻居非常吵闹，经常吵的他晚上睡不着。Larry 问李华有没有什
么好办法可以解决这个问题。今天李华会学到两个常用语：to knock it off 和
to conkout.

    LL： My neighbors are still making a bunch of noise. I wish that they
would just knock it off so that I could get a few hours of sleep. I'm
exhausted. LH ：你的新邻居还是那么吵啊？你只睡几个小时当然会感到疲倦啦！

    你说希望他们怎么啦？Knock it off？那是什么意思？

    LL： Knock it off. When someone says "knock it off" it means that
they want you to stop whatever you're doing ， most likely because what
you're doing is annoying. LH：噢，knock it off就是要人停止做某件事，特
别是让人讨厌的事。你的邻居这么吵，所以你希望他们安静下来，别再吵了。

    LL： Exactly. They have been yelling， singing， and watching TV nonstopfor
days. I would give anything if they would just knock it off. LH ：整天
都在大吼大叫，又是唱歌，又是看电视的，难怪你会受不了。那你有没有跟他们
说过叫他们别再吵了？

    LL： I've thought about it， but I don't want to get into an argument
with them. I've even thought about calling the landlord. LH ：你不想和
他们吵，所以你还没说啊？或许你说的对，先和你的房东谈谈，让他去告诉你的
邻居。

    LL： But they'll probably guess that I'm the one who complained. LH
：就算他们猜到是你去向房东抱怨的，那又怎么样？你管他们生不生你的气？

    LL： You're right ， I guess it doesn't matter if they're mad at me
as long as they knock it off. LH：就是啊，只要他们不再吵了，谁管他们高
兴还是生气？我的邻居经常会把他的垃圾丢在我家门口。

    LL： Did you tell him to knock it off ？

    LH：当然喽，我很客气的请他不要再把垃圾放在我家门口。他现在不再那么
做了。

    LL： That's great. I wish my neighbors were as cooperative. LH：你
要邻居合作，你就得跟他们讲，客气点就行了嘛。Larry ，我觉得你很爱抱怨耶。

    也许你也应该knock it off.

    LL： Very funny ， Li Hua.

    LH： Larry，你好像很困，是不是刚起床啊？

    LL： I must have really conked out. I fell asleep on the couch a few
hours ago. I was so tired that my neighbors couldn't keep me awake any
longer.

    LH：你在沙发上睡了几个小时，连你那邻居也没有把你吵醒。你肯定睡得很
沉。Larry ，你说你conked out？是睡得很死的意思吧？

    LL： Right. To conk out is slang for falling into a deep sleep.

    LH：你看，我猜对了吧！我知道你过去几天有多累，能好好睡一觉总是好的。

    LL： Yeah ， it was wonderful to finally conk out for a few hours.
I really needed the sleep.

    LH：我也希望我能像你一样，conk out a few hours -睡上几个小时。可惜
我还不能睡；我还有很多功课要做。

    LL： Maybe you could conk out early tonight and do your homework in
the morning before class.

    LH：啊？你要我早点去睡，明天早上再起来做功课？不行，不行，我如果还
有功课没做完，我是睡不着的。

    LL： You're a little too conscientious， Li Hua. Sometimes， you have
to relax and take care of yourself.

    LH：你觉得我太认真呀？别人也是这么说。看来我真应该放松一点。嗯，
（yawn），好吧，那我就去睡了，I'll try to conk out now.

    李华今天学到两个常用语。第一个是to knock it off ，意思是要人停止做
一件事，通常是令人讨厌的事。另一个常用语是to conk out ，就是睡的很深，
很沉的意思。
