在这次节目里我们要给大家讲两个习惯用语。一个跟银子，就是英文里的silver
这个字有关。另一个是以铅，就是lead这个字为主。

    我们现在来讲第一个。To be handed something on a silver platter. To
be handed something 就是别人给某人什么东西，或者是某人得到什么东西，on
a silver platter就是银子做的长圆形盘子。To be handed something on a silver
platter 就是别人把什么东西放在银盘子上送给某人。真正的意思就是一个人得
到很贵重的东西，但是并不是靠他自己的努力得来的。

    这听起来好像是好事，但是有的时候并不见得会产生好的结局。下面就是一
个例子。

    例句1 ： Joe got handed his job here on a silver platter because he's
the president's son. But I don't know how long he can last because he
simply is not qualified to handle it and is already in a lot of trouble.

    这很明显是一个公司的雇员在说话。他说：乔伊没有花吹灰之力就得到了他
现在这份工作，因为他是公司总裁的儿子。但是，我不知道他能干多久，因为他

    例句2 ： Everybody in the office thought Jack had more chances than
I did to get the promotion. But at the last minute he found a better paying
job and left our company. So I got handed the promotion on a silver platter.
Isn't it wonderful！

    这个人说：办公室里每个人都认为杰克比我更有可能被提升。但是，到了最

    现在我们来给大家讲解一个和铅有关的习惯用语。铅是很普通的一种金属，
份量很重。一些习惯用语也反应了铅的这一特性。其中一个很能说明问题的习惯
用语就是：To go over like a lead balloon. Lead就是铅，balloon 就是气球。

    气球很轻，能在空中飘动。但是，一只用铅做的气球绝对不可能飘，因为份
量太重。而且事实上也没有人用铅来做气球。

    作为习惯用语，这不过是用来做比喻而已。那末，to go over like a lead
balloon 这个习惯用语是什么意思呢？当一个想法，或一个建议没有能引起其他
人的支持，这种情况就可以形容为：to go over like a lead balloon. 有的时
候，你想说个笑话逗大家一笑，但是听众没有反应，觉得没有什么可笑。这种情
况也可以说是 to go over like a lead balloon.下面就是一个例子。

    例句3 ： When I gave my speech to the club， I started off with a
joke to get the audience in a good mood. But my joke went over like a
lead balloon - noboday even cracked a smile. And it almost ruined the
rest of the speech for me.

    这人说：当我在俱乐部发表演说的时候，我一开始讲了一个笑话，想在听众
