| Pearl Harbor(珍珠港)is another historical landmark, which has probably become more popular since the Hollywood film was made. Over 1.5 million people visit the US Arizona Memorial each year, which is run by the National Parks Service. The site is worth a visit, as it includes a museum and a boat ride out to the memorial. Shuttle buses run to the Memorial from Waikiki and usually take about an hour. Maui(茂宜岛) The other popular, but fairly developed island, is Maui. This second-largest Hawaiian destination is also known as 'The Valley Island', because it is home to two extinct volcanoes separated by a central valley. Although there is some high-rise development, it is all kept to the resorts on the west of the island, leaving plenty of other more tranquil spots to surf and sunbathe. For the chance to see turtles whilst snorkeling, visit the strangely named Slaughterhouse Beach in northwest Maui. To get away from the tourist scene completely, you could visit the east coast, where you will find rainforests, eucalyptus groves and cattle ranches. To protect so much nature and yet allow public access, Hawaii has two national parks, 67 state parks and more than 100 country parks, including some located under water! The Haleakala National Park is most spectacular and is home to the largest dormant volcano on earth. Its lush areas higher in elevation are home to a third of Hawaii's endangered birds, while its desolate crater is so forbidding it was used as a lunar training ground by US astronauts. Hawaii's official state mammal, the humpback whale, arrives like a cetaceous snowbird in late October from the Gulf of Alaska to find mates and calve. The Pacific Whale Foundation conducts whale-watching tours carefully managed so as not to disturb the animals. Fortunate participants often see the mammoth mammals surfacing or breaching the surface and then landing with a thunderous splash. South Kihei Road is the most developed part of the island with shops and fast-food outlets overlooking the beach. It has been criticized highly and suggested this is a prime example of how not to develop a resort, but if you are on a budget, the accommodation here will suit you down to the ground. Like many countries, Maui has its share of traffic and crowds, but fortunately it does not take long to find Maui's quieter side. Stick to the west if you like partying and skimpy bikinis, but also try to take a trip to the east coast to experience the true natural beauty the island has to offer. The US Events “游行庙会”乐翻天 Fun Events is where you'll learn about the different festivals and celebrations that take place across the US. These unique events are a great way to experience life in the USA! ![]() New Years Eve Party in Times Square 时代广场年夜狂欢 Every December 31, hundreds of thousands of revelers brave frigid winter weather and gather in Times Square to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. Famous performers and musical groups entertain the crowds from outdoor stages erected for the occasion. Huge crowds of people pack Times Square, Broadway and the adjacent streets. Frivolity, merriment and often a lot of alcoholic "anti-freeze" pervade the crowd. This is the biggest outdoors New Years Eve party in the US. |
