| San Francisco is consistently voted the best city in the world to visit. With a population of 780,000 San Francisco is only 49 square miles. It is generally accepted that the strait was named "chrysopylae (golden horn)" or Golden Gate by Army Captain John C. Fremont, circa 1846. It is said it reminded him of a harbor in Istanbul named chrysoceras or golden horn. The golden gate bridge has always been painted orange vermilion, or "international orange". Consulting architect Irving Morrow rejected carbon black and steel gray, selecting instead the distinctive orange color because it blends well with the span's natural setting of the Marin Headlands. If the U.S. Navy had its way, the bridge might have been painted black and yellow stripes to assure greater visibility for passing ships. Ride a cable car, spends an afternoon in the alleys of San Francisco's Chinatown（旧金山唐人街）. A population of around 70,000 live in 30 square blocks. The gateway to Chinatown at Bush and Grant Avenue was given to the city of San Francisco by the Republic of Taiwan. Grant Avenue is San Francisco's first street and stands today as the center of Chinatown. The Palace of Fine Arts（艺术宫） was built for the 1915 Panama Pacific Exhibition. It was designed by Bernard. Sentimental San Franciscans saved it from its planned demolition after the exhibition. The Panama Pacific International Exposition was the 1915 worlds fair held in San Francisco, California. Taking over three years to construct, the fair had great economic implications for the city that had been almost destroyed by the great earthquake and fire of 1906. The exposition was a tremendous success, and did much to boost the morale of the entire Bay Area and to help get San Francisco back up on its feet. Dallas 达拉斯 Dallas symbolizes much of the popular image of Texas. A major center for oil and gas, this city goes about its business with refreshing character and gusto. For fans of modern architecture, the business core has several styles of contemporary buildings. At Fair Park（美丽公园）, visitors are presented with a cultural and entertainment district, with attractions that include the Dallas Museum of Natural History（达拉斯自然历史博物馆）, Dallas Aquarium（达拉斯水族馆）at Fair Park, Science Place（科学宫）and Cotton Bowl Stadium（棉花杯球场）, which hosts concerts and both national and international sporting events. Fair Park is an entertainment and cultural center located two miles from downtown Dallas. Within the park are the Dallas Zoo, the Dallas Aquarium, the Music Hall, the Cotton Bowl Stadium, the Texas Vietnam Memorial and much more. For three weeks in the fall each year, the State Fair of Texas is held at Fair Park. The performing arts—dance; music and theater—are well represented in Dallas, with a host of venues offering performances that range from traditional to contemporary styles. |
