Fiona: What do you want her for? Anne: Well, I have to cancel our meeting later today because I've got a sudden pain in my arm and I need to go to the doctor straight away Fiona: Well you'd better leave a message on her voicemail explaining. Anne: Yes, that's a good idea. And I'll ask her to ring me back as soon as she can so we can rearrange. Fiona: I'm sure she’ll be happy to do that. 安：我刚才不断用行动电话连络珍妮，但她就是没有接听。 菲奥纳：你找她干什么？ 安：我得取消今天和她的约会。我手臂忽然痛得厉害，要马上去看医生。 菲奥纳：那么，你最好在她的语音信箱留言，跟她说清楚。 安：对，这是个好主意。我会叫她尽快回电话给我，安排另一个时间见面。 菲奥纳：我想，她会乐意和你约另一个时间。 今天，打电话找不到人家，对方往往有语音信箱请你留言。这种设施叫voicemail或voice mail，例如：(1) I decided to install voicemail on my mobile phone（我决定给我的行动电话设立语音信箱）。(2) The airport has a voicemail system, and staff members can receive voice messages left for them（机场有语音信箱系统，职员可听到留给他们的留言）。 语音信箱服务，一般由电话公司提供，有些电话则自设录音机，可回答并录下打来的电话。录音机英文叫answering machine，英式英文是answerphone，例如：Someone has left a message for you on the telephone answering machine（有人在电话录音机上留了言给你）。 语音信箱或录音机上有留言，电话的留言指示灯或message waiting indicater会不断闪烁(flash)。When I get home, the telephone's message waiting indicator was flashing即‘我回到家里，看见电话的留言指示灯在闪烁’。 录音机等一般会请来电者在‘哔’一声之后留下口信，例如说：I'm sorry I'm out at the moment. Please leave a message after the beep（对不起，我刚出去了，请在 ‘哔’一声之后留言）。 家中电话录得留言，在别处也可用其它电话接听，但必须用按钮电话(push-button telephone)而不是拨号电话(dial telephone)。You may listen to your messages from any push-button telephone。 |
