She is always running out of make-up. Jennifer: I'm really annoyed with my roommate Sara. Michelle: Why? She seems quite nice to me. Jennifer: She's always running out of make-up and when she does she just uses mine without even asking. Michelle: Hm, that's not very nice. Why don't you try locking it up? Jennifer: I could, but she'd probably get really annoyed with me. Michelle: Oh dear, you've got a bit of a problem there. She is always running out of make-up这一句,其实关乎两个动词词组(phrasal verb) : run out和make up。 (1) Our store of firewood is beginning to run out(我们储存的木柴快要用完了)。(2) I must go to the supermarket for some sugar - we've run out/I must go to the supermarket - we've run out of sugar(我们没有糖了,得上超级市场买了)。 常用语to run out of time就是‘没时间了’,例如:Time is running out. If we don't act now, we'll be ruined(时间已经不多了,我们现在不行动,就要完蛋了)。 He tried to make up the time lost by driving at a dangerously high speed(他以危险的高速开车,希望弥补失去的时间)。 She carefully made her face up before going out with her boyfriend(他和男朋友外出之前,先细心打扮)。 Why don't you try locking it up? I tried to lock it up是‘我努力试图把它锁上,但未必成功’;I tried locking it up是‘我把它锁起来,看看有什么效果’。 |
