BERLIN, May 6 -- The European Central Bank (ECB) on Thursday kept its key interest rate unchanged at 1 percent as widely expected earlier.
"At today’s meeting, which was held in Lisbon, the Governing Council of the ECB decided that the interest rate on the main refinancing operations and the interest rates on the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility will remain unchanged at 1.00percent, 1.75percent and 0.25percent respectively," the ECB reported on its website.
The decision was widely expected. Attention now turns to ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet's news conference at 1.30 p.m. local time in Lisbon (1230 GMT) Thursday, which was expected to be dominated by the Greek debt crisis.
Trichet was expected to face questions about ECB's Monday decision to suspend its collateral rules for Greece's debt despite a statement in January that the bank will not change its framework for the sake of any single country. |
