Five Hurdles on the Path to Healthy Hair
来源:网络发布时间:2009-09-03
I always figured that a ponytail was a hassle-free way to keep my hair out of my face while I worked, but during a recent salon session I discovered that this sleek style is doing more harm than good. “I could tell you like ponytails because you have a lot of breakage around your face,” explained my stylist. Yikes!I had no idea that something so small could cause so much damage, so I asked Jennifer Rabideau, owner of HaloSalon and Color Lab in Fort Worth, Texas, about other hair hazards and how to avoid them. Read on for Rabideau’s tips.
1. Overwashing
Good news for girls on the go: You don’t need to wash your hair every morning. “Every head of hair is different, but you probably don’t need to wash your hair more than a couple of times a week … at most every other day,” Rabideau says. “Overwashing puts your sebaceous glands into overdrive, causing more oil to be produced. It also fades your color faster and dehydrates your hair.” If hair looks like it needs a shampoo after only a day or two, Rabideau suggests “a good sebum-regulating shampoo (like Phytocedrat, $24) every third or fourth shampoo to reregulate oil glands.”
2. Deep-Conditioning to Death
Think double the time equals double the benefits? Think again! “Many restructuring conditioners have rigid proteins in the hair that can form chains and make the hair very brittle,” says Rabideau. “Often women think if the directions say ‘Leave on for 15 minutes,’ then two hours or overnight would be even better. That is not the case with restructuring conditioners. Follow the directions!”
3. Brushing Wet Hair
“Hair is at its most fragile state while wet, and brushing can cause the hair fiber to stretch and then tear,” explains Rabineau. “You should always use a wide-toothed comb when untangling wet hair.” Once your hair is at least 80 percent dry, use a round brush for styling. “Divide hair into vertical sections as wide as the diameter of the brush and work from the nape area to the crown,” she says.
4. Putting Hair Up Before It’s Dry
How many times have you rushed to work with an updo instead of taking the time to blow-dry your hair? It’s worth setting the alarm a little earlier to avoid this disastrous ’do. “When wet hair is piled on your head either in a clip, loose bun, or ponytail, air can’t circulate to the skin, causing fungus,” Rabineau explains. (Eww!) “Drying your hair completely, wearing your hair down, and using a shampoo that has some antifungal ingredients such as tea tree or rosemary can help.” One to try: Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo ($8.49).
5. Blow-Drying or Straightening Hair Without Any Products
Lots of women (including this one) like to go light on the hair products so it doesn’t look greasy or over processed. But blow-drying, curling, or straightening with heat can wreak havoc on your hair if you go commando. According to Rabideau, “using a product that is designed to protect the hair is essential during heat styling. Having a dialogue with your stylist about what product to use, and how to use it, can actually preserve your hair, not harm it.
