Why no one is allergic to Wifi

Ian Douglas joined the Telegraph in 1999 when the web was young and simple. Having done most other online jobs, he is now head of digital production. He writes about technology, science, the internet and beekeeping.
Steve Miller, poor man, thinks he is allergic to Wifi. He told the Sun, as was reported on these pages this morning, that he has to avoid public places and can’t go to the pub or hotels because of the ubiquity of the ‘radiation’.
He’s all right at home but said that, ‘If I go somewhere, I can instantly sense the Wifi and have to leg it.’ He is one of the two per cent of British people who believes they are hypersensitive to electromagnetic radiation. They are all wrong, and here is why.
Wifi consists of electromagnetic waves, just like light or radio waves, with a frequency of 2.4GHz, giving it a wavelength of around 12.5cm. There is some variation but not enough of a range to make any difference. 2.4GHz is on the long end of microwave, getting close to radio, rather similar to mobile phone signals. It transmits at much lower power than a mobile phone mast, so even if those signals were harmful, Wifi would be less so.
Mr Miller makes no mention of mobile phones, he is only bothered by Wifi. If it is electromagnetic radiation in general he’s sensitive to, he’s in real trouble as radio waves and visible light flood our atmosphere every minute of every day. A television aerial would be a truly useless thing if there weren’t electromagnetic radiation at close to the frequency of Wifi being blasted around the country by hundreds of transmitters. Mobile phones would be hopeless lumps of plastic and glass.
I don’t know Mr Miller, I’ve never spoken to him. My first thought, though, when someone tells me they have an unexplained feeling whenever they’re in a variety of public places that only goes away when they’re at home is not that they’re mysteriously allergic to something that that is present at every point of the earth’s surface, but that they may be agoraphobic.
