Lost Generation

来源:网络发布时间:2009-07-24

There is more than a young generation lost in this nation, consider the elderly.
I walked down the hall heading to see my 88 year old grandma who had been hospitalized due to pneumonia & infection in her kidneys. Each member of the family was taking turns sitting with her due to her dementia. As I did I peered into some of the rooms on this wing of the hospital, it seemed that almost every bed held an elderly person. Some were hooked to machines, others appeared to be confused, and some just looked lonely. I couldn’t help but notice that there was no family there, no one to care for them, no one to ease the ache of loneliness, and no one to help free them from the haze of confusion that washed over them so apparently. My heart broke inside me. I knew I was there for my grandma, but there was no one there for them. I had to ask myself, “ was this the lost generation. “
I know that there has been a younger generation that has been labeled the lost generation, but could there be another generation that has been lost in our culture.
A generation that passes through life unnoticed and unheard. Hidden away, they have lost their direction and are in desperate need of hope. Not just our young and abandoned, but our old and frail.
They are graying, with withered skin etched on their face & hands, their eyes look tired & desperate, and yet no one notices them. Could it be that we are far to busy to slow down and give a moment of our time to anyone that may swerve us off the course we are traveling on? Are we afraid of those who have come before us to pave the way, afraid that they carry some awful disease that if we get to close we might catch it? Do we simply not want to be bothered with the ailments of those close to deaths door?
Whatever the case may be, we to may one day we will be those same people that we long to avoid. We pay thousands of dollars to stay young, we may run a hundred miles an hour a day to get accomplished the task at hand, we may turn up the music to tune out the thoughts of getting older, and try our best to run the other direction when we see those in need of our help. But, try as we might time and age will catch up with us.
As a culture & nation we have come to detest the elderly. Where we once held them in high regard and honor, always enjoying their stories of history we now see them as a pain, always in our way. Isn’t it time we wake up America? We have lost so much in this nation all in the name of progress & progress is good, but loosing a piece of history, a piece of ourselves, a generation that has gone before us to pave the way for us is not good. Yes, there is a lost generation and though it may be a young generation in a lot of ways there is another generation that remains just as lost, it is the elderly.
So, the next time you see a withered hand extended in need, or peer into the eyes of a lonely aging face don’t run or look away. Extend your hand back and embrace a piece of history. Remember, it might just be you in that place one day.
