count:从鸭子数起 In childhood, we count ducks. 小时侯,我们数鸭子。(不幸的是,经常搞成一三五九十) In majority, we count money. 长大了,我们数钱。(不幸的是,要么是数不完,要么是还没数就完了) When money grows to a certain degree, we go to the bank and open an account, entitling the bank clerks to count money for us. 当钱增长到一定程度,我们去银行开了帐户,让银行职员帮我们数钱。 It seems obvious that count and account are closely related. Count与account两词实为近亲,似乎很明显。 At times, we visited the bank, requiring the bank clerks to make an account of incomes and expenditures. 时不时的,我们还得拜访一下银行,要求银行职员陈述一下我们的收入和开支情况。 小结:count-数;account-帐户/陈述 If you give a beggar 5 cents, you don't take it into account. 若你施予一个乞丐五分钱,你不会怎么考虑这笔帐(不会把它记入帐户)。 If you aim at big, you don't take small into account. 若你目标在于干大事,则不会把小节考虑进来。 小结:take...into account由“把……记入帐户”引申成“把……考虑进去” What accounts for the loss of money in the account? 是什么导致了帐户里的财富缩水? It accounts for half of the original amount. 它占了原总量的一半。 小结:account for-导致(一般是);占(后跟比率) design: 签名很重要,所以要设计 见识一下内含的词sign: In terms of economy, GDP has been regarded a significant sign.(significant若忘了请回去复习) 就经济而言,人们一直将GDP视为一个重要符号(标志)。 The current situation shows no signs of recovery. 眼下的情形未表现出任何复苏的迹象。 In terms of human beings, signature has been considered by many as an essential sign for their taste. (essential也忘了?跟上面significant在同一个地方讲的,回去吧!) 就一个人而言,许多人将签名视为他们品味的重要标志。 Hence the popularity of signature design. 因此就有了签名设计之风行(注意:Hence A=因此就有了A,hence领衔的无谓语特殊句型)。 小结:sign, signature, significant实为一家,就让design也来凑个热闹吧。 particular:部分有很多种 Generally speaking, YOS is lazy. 总体说来,老鞋是个懒蛋。(注意general的根本意思是“总体的”,对立面是“部分”) For some particular jobs, however, YOS will be very active. 但对某些特定的事情,老鞋又很积极。 Thinking, in particular, appeals to YOS all the time.(注意位置:逗号与句子分开,是连接性状语,如上句中的however一样。) 尤其是思考这个东东,无时不吸引着老鞋。 Particular之本,在于其中的part(部分):所谓“特定的”,也就是不是全体而只是一部分;所谓“尤其/特别”,就是说完整体后专拿一部分来说。 YOS is unlikely to participate in the club of signature design. 老鞋不太可能加入到签名设计俱乐部。 Participate in这个“参加”,也隐有part之意:参加一个啥,即成为啥之一部分也。 To prove this(为证明此理),老鞋还拉来了assistants(帮手):同义短语take part in,不亦像乎?其实还有个partake in(提示:不常用,休得记忆),也是“参加”,不用仔细看也是亲戚吧? Years ago, I departed from my home town for a college. 多年以前,俺离开故乡,去读大学。 Depart: 一个部分(part, 此处为俺),从一个整体(my home town)脱离下来(de=down):离开。 I still remember the building called the Department of Postgraduates. 俺依然记得那栋楼,被称为研究生部。 Department: 部门就是部分,只不过是衙门学校等机构的一部分。 What else is worth mentioning is that we shared an apartment with some girls. 其它值得一提的是我们是跟一些女孩子共享一个公寓。(是真的,愿接受调查) Apartment公寓:大家一起住,每人一部分。 We put language under the microscope, in the same way as a physicist breaks any object into kinds of particles. 我们将语言放在显微镜下,正如一个物理学家将任何的物体分解成各种各样的粒子。(注意两个动宾介哦) Particle:粒子,是物体的很小的部分(不错,此词的尾巴icle意思就是“小”);而作为一个语法术语,它是“小品词”,即我们熟知的in, at, on之类的小不点词。 impression:印象是压出来的 If you press the skin of the dead with a finger, you will leave a deep impression. 若你用一个手指使劲压死人的皮肤,会留下一个常常的印痕。 Impression原只是普通的“印痕/印记”:把物体压(press)进去(im=in)形成的东东。 If you make the dead sing, you will also leave a deep impression. 若你能让死人唱个卡拉OK,你也会留下一个深刻的印象。 “印痕”引申成“印象”,英汉同理:要不我们怎么也叫深“刻”的印象? In other words, people will be deeply impressed; they will say your job is really impressive. 换言之,人们会有深刻的印象(注意be impressed为“被动不被”之一:不翻译成“被”);他们会说,你这一把刷子实在非同小可(令人印象深刻)。 压“出来”又是什么呢? I just wonder how the dead express their ideas; I want to explore their way of expression; they keep silent and have no expression on their face——until you arrive. 老鞋犯迷惑的是:死人如何表达他们的观点;我想探寻他们的表达方式;他们始终一言不发而且面无表情——直到你的到来。(上面不是说过你能让死人唱卡拉OK嘛,哈哈!) Ex=out,基本义是“出”。Expression, 有时就是表达,落实在脸上就是“表情”,反正都是裸露在外的。 depress 有良心的还记得de=down吧? depress the price 压下价格 The dead may be depressed, failing to express themselves effectively. 不能有效地表达自己,死人们可能会倍感沮丧。 The Great Depression has often been cited. 大萧条经常被引述。(以说明资本主义是垂死的等道理) 略需交代的是:down基本义是“向下”,引申成“不好”,对心情是“不爽”,对经济是“萧条”,不必死记。 oppress The society is divided into two classes, the oppressors and the oppressed, according to Marx. 社会被分为两个阶层,压迫者和被压迫者——老马如是说。 老鞋如是说:op=ob=against;所以oppress这种压(press),是对抗式(op=ob)的压迫。 suppress The oppressed may fight, but the oppressors will try all means to suppress the rebellion. 被压迫者可能会战斗,但压迫者会千方百计____镇压叛乱。 提示:sup=sub=under,“镇压”不也是“压下去”吗? compress 有良心的还记得com吧? Please compress your speech to five minutes. 请把你的演讲____到五分钟。 压缩。 处于核心的press还有两句话说。 The dead feel can feel no pressure, I suppose. 死人感觉不到压力,我觉得。 Even the most popular, if dead, feel no pressure, even that from the press, either. 即使最受欢迎的(万人迷),如果死了,也感觉不到压力,即使是来自媒体的压力。 老鞋的阴谋是两个问题:pressure为名词;press本身做名词还可以是“媒体”,如the press conference是新闻发布会。 那再补充一句,希望有助于记忆。 What is the press? It means pressure, to the government, in particular. 什么是新闻界?它意味着压力,尤其是对于政府。(当然这说的是西方,英语不是西方人发明出来的嘛!) 老鞋很罗嗦,还有两句话: 第一, 今天跟死人耗上了,实在对不起。 第二, 还偷偷地反复纠缠了一个小问题:the+形容词,表示一类,如the dead为“死人”,敬请体察。 |
