　　Why do so many Americans distrust what they read in their newspapers? The American society of Newspaper Editors is trying to answer this painful question. The organization is deep into a long self-analysis known as the journalism credibility project.

　　Sad to say , this project has turned out to be mostly low-level findings about factual errors and spelling and grammar mistakes ,combined with lots of head-scratching puzzlement about what in the world those readers really want .

　　But the sources of distrust go way deeper. Most journalists learn to see the world through a set of standard templates (patterns) into which they plug each day’s event.

　　为什么如此多的美国人不相信他们从报刊上看到的东西呢?美国报刊编辑协会正在尝试解释这一让人头疼的问题。该组织正在进行长期的自我分析，即人们所知的新闻可信度调查。

　　令人遗憾的是，新闻可信度调查的最终结果主要是一些低水平的发现，它只是发现了一些报道与事实不符以及报道中存在的拼写和语法错误等问题，其中还夹杂着许多关于读者究竟想要什么的困惑。

　　但对报刊不信任有更深层的原因。大部分记者通过一套标准模式来看世界，并用它衡量每天发生的事。
