Dwelling (2) 10) When the weather is hot, we turn on the air conditioner. 天热的时候就开空调。 * air conditioner 的作用不但在调节温度，也能调节湿度。 11) Please don't let the dog come in the house. 请别让狗进到屋子里。 * 有没有 come，意思都不会有改变，美国有 let in 的惯用语。 12) Why did you come home so late last night? 昨晚你为什么那么晚才回家？ * “come home”，“come back”，“return”的意义都相似。 13) Dad is building another room onto the back the house. 爸爸另外在屋子的后面盖一个房间。 * 欧美的 weekend carpenter 也兼表“增建房屋”的意思。 由于含有 attached to 的意义，所以才使用 onto。 14) In the fall, the boys prune the trees. 在秋天，男孩们便修剪那些树木。 * prune 是指把树上无用的树枝剪掉。 15) After the flood, the carpets were wet for a month. 洪水过后一个月，毛毡还是湿的。 16) I hate to dust the furniture and bookcases. 我非常讨厌擦拭家具和书架上的尘埃。 * dust 是尘埃，但作动词时便变成拂拭尘埃。 dust 和 dirt 有不同的意义在。 冲着玩泥巴的孩子说“Don't get dirty.”，但并不说“Don't get dusty.”。 17) My grandparents live in the house next door. 我的祖父母住在隔壁的房子里。 * 就是说，他们变成 next door neighbors。 18) All the neighbors helped us move in. 邻居们都帮忙为我们搬家。 * move 还有移动的意思，因而产生搬家的释义。 又因为附有 in，所以作“搬来”解。 |
