An Indonesian passenger plane crash

landed and burst1 into flames on Wednesday, killing 23 people trapped inside. However, 117 people managed to escape by climbing through the burning ruins to safety, officials said.

The Garuda Airlines Boeing 737-400 shot out flames as it appeared to overpass the runway at Yogyakarta, a city in Indonesia in the centre of the island of Java, 500 kilometers from the capital Jakarta, reports said.

Ruth Bamggadan, a survivor, said that when the plane hit the ground it stopped suddenly. "Things started to fall down and I saw flames outside my window. But once the emergency door was opened a lot of people were able to get out of the plane. When the smoke started to get in the plane, people became really frightened," she said, "but unlike in many other accidents, the evacuation2 was very orderly, with some passengers helping elderly ladies to evacuate." Unfortunately, the people sitting in the front of the plane were the last able to get out. "It’s a pity that some passengers lost their lives," she said.

Downer, a firefighter, who helped the passengers escape from the dangerous plane, didn’t agree with the guess that the crash was made by some people on purpose. He said it appeared to be "just an accident where the aircraft ran off the run-way. Of course, we all feel very sorry." Indonesia has suffered two other transportation accidents in recent months —in January an Adam Air plane disappeared with more than 100 passengers and workers on board, and in late December a ship sank leaving hundreds dead.

The only threat to humankind, apart from humankind itself, is nature. Natural disasters are the result of natural environmental processes that have a damaging effect on people. Natural disasters come in many forms: such as geological events like earthquakes, climatic events like storms and tornadoes and fire events like forest fires and wildfires.

The damage done by natural disasters is mainly because of our inability to predict1 exactly when they will happen. Although great progress has been made in designing and developing forecasting2 models for some natural disasters, complete certainty is still impossible.

Furthermore, even though we were able to predict these disasters, preventing them is equally impossible. So we only have two ways to both prevent injuries or deaths and reduce economic losses to the least. These two methods are to prepare before a natural disaster hits, and to manage the necessary resources and public services after natural disaster strikes.

These two things have been at the leading position of the projects of both national governments and international organizations. In the United States, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is responsible for the "preparedness, response and recovery planning" of both manmade and natural disasters.

Most natural disasters cannot be prevented, and both emergency preparation and good disaster management are the best ways to deal with them. Although natural events may appear to serve no purpose but to punish and destroy, natural disasters are display of our planet’s evolution3 and its state of change.

  Notes:

  1. predict v.预告

  2. forecast v.预报

  3. evolution n.进化,发展

  A. They can not be prevented.

  B. They are both geological events.

  C. They are both the result of natural environmental processes.

  D. They cause damage to people.

  3. The reason why natural disasters cause so much damage is that ___________.

  A. it is very difficult to predict when exactly they will happen

  B. our forecasting equipment is too old for many natural disasters

  C. we don’t do enough preparation before natural disasters strike

  D. we don’t have the necessary public services to use after natural disasters strike

Recently Southeast Asia suffered one of the most powerful and destructive earthquakes in its modern history, when an extremely large and frightening wall of sea water struck Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Maldives. The huge earthquake killed more than 170 thousand people, and the number of victims is expected to grow as rescuers uncover more and more bodies from the ruins.

The earthquake that rocked Southeast Asia was the strongest one since 1964, when another very strong quake hit measuring 9.2 on the Richter scale. For the time being, this latest earthquake in Southeast Asia ranks the 11th on the list of the most powerful quakes of modern times, and it also enters top 30 of the most destructive1 natural disasters in history.

The Great China Earthquake, which struck Shanxi in February, 1556, is considered the most destructive earthquake of all. According to Chinese historical sources, this earthquake killed 830 thousand people. The walls of narrow valleys2 between mountains fell down and buried hundreds of houses with all their people within minutes. Shanxi holds a terrible record of human losses when it comes to earthquakes; the record has not been broken yet.

Another natural disaster that happened in China takes the second position in the list of the most destructive earthquakes. The earthquake struck the Tangshan Mountains in 1976 and measured 7.8, killing 242 thousand people. It is still considered one of the most disastrous earthquakes of the 20th century in terms of lives lost.

There is no doubt that the number of earthquake-caused human losses has a close relationship with the types of buildings in the disaster area. A 5-6 scale quake’s striking in a densely3 populated area of Japan, for example, may not leave any victim at all, because of the engineering behind the constructions there. A similar earthquake in Turkey or Iran, for example, may result in hundreds of even thousands of victims.

  Notes:

  1. destructive adj.破坏性的

  2. valley n.山谷

  3. densely adv.密集地
