Directions: 

Yesterday, you received a letter of invitation from Tom Johnson, one of your American friends. You are asked to attend his birthday party. But you can not accept his invitation. Write a letter to Tom, telling him your refusal, stating your reason(s), and making an apology.

Write your letter with no less than 100 words. Do not sign your own name at the end of the letter; use "Li Ming" instead. You do not need to write the address.

Directions:

Now there are more and more Chinese people learning the international language, English. Some feel the importance and urgent need to learn the language. Some others are just following the trend or are forced by others to learn it. Write a short article with the title "On the Wave of Learning English in China" of about 200 words to express your viewpoints.

　　First of all, thank you for inviting me to attend your birthday party to be held on Jan 20, 2006. I would like to accept your warm invitation but I can not due to an earlier appointment.

　　Two weeks ago, I made an appointment with one of my high-school classmates. He will accompany his mother who suffers from cancer to Beijing to see a doctor. Since he is a stranger in Beijing, he asks me for help and I have consented.

　　Anyway I feel sorry for disappointing you. However, please wait to receive my surprising gift for you by EMS on your birthday. Many Happiness returns of the day!

　　With the development of economy and broader communication with the outside world, more and more people have realized the importance of learning English. There are numerous English training courses and classes provided to students and those at work. There are many kinds of exams and English level certificates for pursuers to take. This is surely a huge wave of learning English.

　　No doubt English is very important, but only to those in need of using it in their study and work. For example, if one works in a foreign capital company where there are a lot of foreign employees, and English is the daily communication tool, a good mastery of English is not only useful, but also essential. If a student wants to study abroad, it is necessary for him to lay a very good foundation in language, or else he will not get the permission or waste a lot of time in his stay in foreign universities.

　　As I see it, students in Chinese universities spend too much time on English learning. Statistics show that most students devote almost half of all their study time to English. This is not a good trend. Anyhow, students should deal with their majors more seriously and with more energy. As for those whose have no communication with foreigners or foreign materials in their work at all, it is not a wise choice to waste a lot of time learning English unless one is really very interested in it.
