　　1. figure v. 描绘;计算;推测

　　The author characterizes the central figure as a weakling.

　　作者把书中的中心人物描绘成一个懦弱的人。

　　2. fine n. 罚金，罚款

　　She paid the fine under protest.

　　她争执一番后，无可奈何地缴纳了罚金。

　　3. front n. (尤指面临困难的)某特定方面

　　The government has reduced inflation, but has not made much progress on the employment front.

　　政府抑制了通货膨胀，但在就业方面没能取得多大进展。

　　4. further v. 促进，增进

　　The prime minister's visit further promoted the cooperation between the two countries.

　　总理的访问进一步促进了两国间的合作。

　　5. grade v. 分等，分级

　　The competent authorities responsible for the enterprise shall fix a time limit for achieving the highest grade of the national standards.

　　企业主管部门要规定生产企业达到国家标准比较高等级的期限。

　　6. house n. 议院

　　7. institution n. 制度;惯例

　　The institution is supposed to symbolize the "idea of duration" in law.

　　制度应代表法律中的"持久观念"。

　　8. lead n. 铅

　　The so-called “lead” in a pencil is not lead at all, but chiefly different form of carbon called graphite.

　　铅笔中所谓的铅，并不是“铅”，而主要是一种不同形态的炭，称为石墨。

　　9. issue vt. 发行

　　The government is expected to issue a statement about the crisis.

　　预料政府会对这场危机发表一个声明。

　　10. jump v. 暴涨，猛增

　　The price of oil jumped sharply in 1973.
